Listen Brandi, if you wanted to show off your legs THAT much you should have just worn shorts. Now this may of course have just been an innocent disingenuous mistake, like oh oops I didn’t notice the two large gaping holes in my jeans, but when you want to purposefully “do something wrong”, a missing button or something might be better next time. Also if her “vestmental imperfection [was] for the purpose of enhancing status”, why would she dress as if she couldn’t afford a pair of nice designer jeans, which she obviously can. What is up with celebrities and the rich wanting to dress like the poor? It must be the “vulgar nouveau rich” style that has recently emerged. As you can see she pairs ripped jeans, which were most likely bought that way, with an expensive Louis Vuitton bag thus sending out mixed ambivalent messages. She is therefore combining her jeans, an item of clothing that were first worn by lower working class citizens, with items of clothing that stand in sharp contradiction of them and that symbolize a higher class, such as her blazer as well. Oh well, we understand that your just making a statement, just because you’ve “got it” does not mean that you necessarily have to “flaunt it”, so it’s okay if you don’t want to wear designer jeans that you can actually afford. At least your jeans are ripped in the front and not the back near the booty . That would be worse. But hey at least the man in the billboard by your side seems to be as happy as you are with the outfit that your wearing.
Is it surprising to anyone that the man sitting next to Lady Gaga is exasperatedly starring at the large ornament on her head as if all hope in humanity is gone? For God’s sake Lady Gaga, you’re at an award show, not a carnival. Yet again, Lady Gaga has always been known for wearing crazy elaborate outfits and costumes that go beyond any modern-day societal norms, so the man sitting next to her should have seen it coming. Through costumes and masks, Lady Gaga takes on new identities such as this oh-so distracting outfit which in fact is a great example of the modern “carnival theory”. With this “flashy costume”, Lady Gaga creates a “sexy, independent [and] shocking carnival persona”. And of course the tea cup she is holding was obviously a needed accessory….right?
It’s also interesting to note how she chose to express her identity ambivalence through wearing androgynous clothing. She does this by wearing a man’s vest with a translucent body suit underneath, as if nothing else was needed. Except the large what looks to be crystal hat, paired with the largest most uncomfortable looking heels ever. Why do women go through the pain of wearing large heels that make it difficult to walk just to be in fashion? Well duh…because their sparkly and they shine! We know you want to blend masculine and feminine symbols together to create a sexy cross gender look, kind of like Rihanna , but were all the feasibly dangerous spikes on your costume necessary? Also notice the packed on the black raccoon-eye makeup used to portray her own grooming code and femininity, since makeup is more attractive to the opposite sex. Overall Lady Gaga, you look like a large crystal…but a fashionable one at that.
We love you anyways J-Lo. No but really, since research has established that we transmit most of our messages through the face, wouldn’t it make sense to always want to make our faces pretty and appealing. With our faces, we can communicate to others who we are and what we want them to think we are. So on the right side J-Lo wants to be perceived as a beautiful, seductive Hollywood actress, and on the left….well, I’ll leave that up to you to decide. The overall drastic change is of course due to the red-lipstick, mascara and eye-liner, which are grooming codes that females use to send out a certain signal, such as I am feminine and powerful. Cosmetics have in fact always been “instrumental in liberating women to express themselves sexually on their own terms”, so J-Lo can therefore choose to look good or not. If she does choose to look good, she will smack on red lipstick, and flaunt her eyes with mascara to make her eyelashes look longer and darker. There is of course also such a hting as wearing too much makeup, so J-Lo might want to find a nice in between. Now her hair is something else altogether. “The way people have worn their hair has always been a sign of beauty, personality…and even physical power”. In these two photos, J-Lo’s un-brushed messy hair makes a huge difference in her appearance compared with her wavy curled hair. I guess you either go all out or not at all.
